Setting Sail With Excellence: US News 2024 Rankings Highlight Leading Cruise Lines for Globetrotters National

whats the best cruise line

Whether it’s a hairy chest contest at the pool or late-night club hopping, the party begins from the moment you step onboard. Maybe it should be ranked as one of the best cruise lines for fun, as well as for being budget friendly. Whether you want to sample a short three-night adventure or plan to jump straight into an expedition cruise, we’ve got important details that make the decision easier. Below is our guide to the 11 best cruise lines for first-time cruisers of all travel styles. A great cruise ship specialty restaurant should feel like date night at an exciting venue – and that’s exactly what Norwegian Cruise Line delivers on its ships.

Best cruise line for kids

It goes without saying that they are significantly more expensive than a mainstream cruise. Azamara, Windstar and Viking Ocean cruises are three examples of luxury cruises. Single cruisers on Norwegian have access to a dedicated lounge and meetups where they can mingle with other travelers, too. That’s not to mention all the regular activities and excursions Norwegian offers, from rock climbing and bowling to spa treatments to boxing classes. The line also maintains a year-round presence in the Galapagos and has expedition ships sailing both the Arctic and Antarctic -- in fact, we’d place it a close second on the list of best cruise lines for expeditions. While drinks, tips and all dining venues are included in the cruise fare, excursions are not.

Carnival Cruise Line

When visiting ports of call, Viking itineraries feature the highest average hours in port per day, which gives travelers extra time to explore destinations and their unique attractions. Food options include gourmet specialties, quick-serve bites and 24-hour room service, so you and your family can eat anytime you're hungry. Parents can even book a romantic dinner while the kids have fun at one of the supervised youth clubs. By definition, small ships hold fewer than 1200 passengers, usually making the cruise experience more intimate with more individualized service. Emerald Yacht Cruises, a line best known for its river ships, launched its first ocean-going vessel, Emerald Azzura, in 2022 followed by an identical sister ship, Emerald Sakara, in 2023.

Life revolves around time on deck as the ships follow the sun to the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with champagne-fuelled pool and beach parties. The ship’s movement and hills that surround the rivers block towers and slow the land-based signal. Ama recently partnered with Ancestry to help guests trace their family history and heritage. During the summer cruise season, the line partners with Disney to make family river cruising magic.

The modern spa is more than a place to relax; it’s a true escape, where the atmosphere and thermal suite complement state-of-the-art treatments. Norwegian Cruise Line has always recognized this in its Mandara Spa, which keeps getting better. Norwegian Viva and Prima boast the first charcoal saunas at sea in a thermal complex that includes a two-story waterfall, gorgeous salt pools, an ice room and infrared sauna. Virgin Voyages is light-years ahead of the pack when it comes to cruise entertainment.

There are alternative dining options for a charge, as well as a complimentary buffet. In the top class of Queens Grill Suites, complimentary mini bars are stocked with soft drinks and two bottles of wine or spirits. While best known for its seven-night Trans-Atlantic crossings between London and New York and its 100-plus-night world cruises, Cunard’s fleet actually sails almost the entire globe aside from the Arctic and Antarctic. Cunard’s ships, Queen Mary 2 in particular, returns passengers to traditional ocean liners with her elegant Art Deco design and white-gloved service on a ship where afternoon tea is a grand affair. Disney cruises range from three to 14 nights in length, which makes the longer cruises ideal for guests wanting to see more of the world in Disney style.

Best for Families: Royal Caribbean

These include a private car and driver in every port, an exclusive private dining experience and an in-suite spa with unlimited treatments. If you're wondering what is the best cruise line for luxury travelers, look no further. Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an unrivaled experience for the most discerning travelers.

Or just treat yourselves to date-night dinners at one of the restaurants helmed by a Michelin-starred chef. Cruising while single can get expensive since most cruise lines charge based on double occupancy. For single travelers, the best cruise line to travel on is Norwegian Cruise Lines.

However, to offset this drawback, drink prices are reasonable ($5-6 for a beer and $9 for basic cocktails), including the tip. It doesn’t matter if you want adventure, relaxation or a combination of both, the best cruises offer a convenient and all-inclusive way to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of planning individual itineraries. Silversea offers door-to-door inclusive fares featuring executive car transfers within 52 miles of your chosen airport, plus flights and hotels as needed. Gratuities are not included for either the ship’s crew or the shoreside tour guides. Ama often has airfare specials and airport transfers included when you book airfare through the cruise line.

First, this ensures coverage if your trip is canceled or you can’t travel. Second, purchasing early may qualify you for add-on coverage like “cancel for any reason,” which is typically available only within a specific period (about 15 days) after you book your trip. Cruise lines offering or hosting themed trips are Norwegian Cruise Line, Windstar Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

Dining mixes regional specialities with Avalon Fresh options, featuring local ingredients and vegetarian dishes. Its latest ship, Rotterdam, is the seventh to carry the historic name — first used in 1872 — for the line.

The ships are intimate with the largest one carrying barely over 3,000 passengers. Disney staterooms are a touch larger than average across all categories and have split bathrooms featuring tubs along with room-dividing curtains (standard in most cabins). Once onboard, guests can rely on their suite host for everything from dinner reservations in the ship’s restaurants to popcorn for a movie afternoon. Usually, just one on short cruises and two on six nights or longer sailings.

Since then other “greatest known depths” have been recorded, but, as with Pisces further investigation has failed to substantiate them. It is likely that these erroneous readings are due to the sonar pulses being “bounced” of the steep Loch walls and being received via the sidelobes.

Unfortunately our tours aren’t suitable for those who are pregnant or have a back problem. Your safety and enjoyment are our main concern and even on the calmest days, if the weather changes and there’s an unpredictable wave, motions could occur. We require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to cancel or amend a booking. We recommend wrapping up warm for your unique Loch Ness experience – even the warmest days in the Highlands can have a chill, especially in the middle of the loch! The Glenliath also has adequate indoor seating for those colder highland days, drinks and snacks can be arranged on request.

Where do Loch Ness cruises leave from?

Yes we offer speedboat tours of Loch Ness all year – however, availability varies depending on the time of year. During peak season, from March 1 to October 31, we carry out four tours a day. From November 1 to February 28, trips must be pre-booked with a minimum of four passengers to go ahead. A Loch Ness cruise offers a fascinating experience for visitors eager to explore the legendary Loch Ness in Scotland.

Everything is colorful as the trees green up after winter and wildflowers cover hillsides, and the weather gets gradually warmer. Best of all, spring is (surprisingly!) uncrowded, so you’ll be able to explore without the worry of crowds and take advantage of lower prices on accommodation and tours. If you’re visiting the Highlands, a Loch Ness cruise is one of the best ways to experience this region (and yes, the “monster” too!). You’ll also have access to expert skippers who have dedicated their lives to uncovering the secrets of this remarkable body of water. They’ll share their insights and knowledge, giving you a unique and unparalleled perspective on famous sightings of the monster and the history of Scotland’s most mysterious loch.

Yet, getting out on the actual water will make you appreciate the Highlands in a different way. Speaking of rain, the Loch Ness tours pretty much go out in any weather. The inside of our Jacobite Cruise was very comfortable and had panoramic windows so you won’t miss anything. We were happy got there early as our Loch Ness cruise filled up fast. We arrived 20 minutes early and we walked over to snap some photos of the highland cows on property.

When we toured the historic Urquhart castle later that day we noticed that some of the boat cruises actually stop here. This will give you limited free time at the castle ruins, but it’s still a fun combination if you want to see both. Whether you choose a leisurely sightseeing cruise or an adrenaline-pumping speedboat tour, Loch Ness boat trips offer something for everyone. Soak up the breathtaking scenery, immerse yourself in local lore, and create memories that will last a lifetime on an unforgettable adventure on the legendary waters of Loch Ness. Drumnadrochit Cruise offers an enchanting and captivating experience for travelers seeking to explore the legendary Loch Ness in Scotland.

Repositioning cruises 2024 and 2025: A guide to one-way, seasonal cruise travel

cruise ship repositioning

We’re often easy to please whenever on a repositioning cruise that has a great itinerary at a low cost. Other routes can be even more packed with ports, such as Asia repositioning cruises or repositioning cruises to/from South America. On a Panama Canal repositioning cruise we took from Florida to Chile, the ship stopped at amazing Latin American ports nearly every other day as we journeyed down the western coast of South America. These seasonal repositioning cruises occur in the greatest abundance twice per year, peaking around late March and well into April, and then again peaking again in October and November. Most repositioning cruises operate seasonally, with routes that follow the same patterns every year.

Are repositioning cruises cheaper than other cruises?

These cruises offer a chance to embark on a journey of discovery, spanning multiple destinations and continents. Repositioning cruises are the name for one-way sailings that bring the ship to a new home port or a different part of the world to kick-start a new cruise season. Because these sailings often cross oceans, you'll likely experience ports in more than one cruise region — and have ample sea days to take advantage of the spa, dining and entertainment options on board.

Those are just a few examples, but we’ll review all the common seasonal repositioning cruise routes later in this article. Here are some examples of common repositioning routes, although itineraries and ports vary by cruise line and season. Make sure you’re compatible with the amenities, the food and the general vibe of the ship. Larger ships may have more options for onboard entertainment, which is useful for those long sea days.

"But you could just spend all day reading a book on your expansive balcony," says Randall Soy, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Regent Seven Seas Cruises. "Just seeing the horizon, all the way around, you feel the power of nature. You’re out there by yourself and, even without the stops, you recognize you're a global citizen." Seabourn sets the standard for luxury travel with its unrivaled onboard features and amenities, ensuring an unparalleled experience for discerning travelers. Let us set sail together and uncover the wonders that await on the high seas. It depends on the sailings to which you're comparing them, but repositioning cruises are often relatively affordable. Even though repositioning sailings can often be two to three weeks in length, you might find that they're less expensive than a regular weeklong voyage that begins and ends in the same port of call.

Indulge in unparalleled luxury and comfort aboard Celebrity Cruises’ repositioning cruises in 2024 & 2025, boasting an array of unique features and amenities designed to enhance your journey. Relax in stylish staterooms with modern amenities and breathtaking ocean views, savor exquisite cuisine crafted by world-renowned chefs, and unwind in sophisticated lounges and entertainment venues. With attentive service and innovative onboard experience, Celebrity Cruises ensures that every moment of your repositioning cruise is nothing short of extraordinary. These cruises can also offer different itineraries and ports of call than regular cruises, providing passengers with the opportunity to explore new destinations.

You can even consider a sailing instead of a long-haul flight, Allen says. "I've had clients use seasonal, five-day Hawaii to Vancouver repositioning cruises in the spring to avoid taking a red-eye back to the U.S.," she says. Unlike most Caribbean and river cruises, which make frequent stops, you'll spend most of your time on a repositioning cruise on the ship. Many cruise lines offer enhanced lecture programs and more daytime activities—like cooking demonstrations and language classes—than usual to fill those sea days.

Cape Liberty, which is just miles from New York City, offers incredible views of the city skyline and easy access to many cruise destinations, along with everything NYC has to offer. Of course, when it comes to the best transatlantic cruises, Cunard is a classic option. The Sunrise then repositioned to New York City for a summer program that included four- to 14-night cruises to Bermuda, Canada & New England, and the Caribbean. The beauty of endless ocean views comes with the reality of limited port calls and land excursions. If you prefer frequent stops and exploring new cities daily, this might be a drawback.

This social dimension adds a layer of richness to the journey, often leading to lifelong friendships and memorable connections. At its core, a repositioning cruise is a one-way itinerary, transporting passengers from one port to another that diverges from the ship's regular route. These voyages arise out of practical necessity, with cruise lines relocating their ships to accommodate the change in seasons. Repositioning cruises range in length, potentially lasting a week, a month, or even longer, depending on the specific route. Despite the variety in duration, they all offer a unique and extended sea journey often at a lower cost than traditional cruises. Immerse yourself in a unique seafaring adventure as we uncover the lesser-known marvel of the travel industry.

For example, a ship sailing from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean during fall will kick off with brisk weather but end in a warm, humid climate. Repositioning cruises often have much lower per day rates than "regular" sailings. That's because they're not as universally appealing due to the reasons mentioned above. For example, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines frequently offers such trips between some of its U.K. Fellow British line Ambassador Cruises also offers the occasional shorter repositioning trip between British ports.

Embark on an extraordinary adventure with Norwegian Cruise Line’s repositioning cruises in 2024 & 2025, exploring a diverse range of captivating destinations. Traverse the azure waters of the Caribbean, soak in the cultural richness of Europe, or witness the natural splendor of Alaska. From bustling metropolises to secluded paradises, NCL’s itineraries are meticulously crafted to offer an immersive experience like no other. Sail away to iconic ports of call, including majestic fjords, historic cities, and tropical islands, ensuring every moment is filled with wonder and excitement. If you are a big fan of a particular company – just search its page here – it is that simple.

The exact route and time of year of each repositioning cruise will impact your chance of rough seas too. If you’re on a transatlantic repositioning cruise at the end of September, this is the height of hurricane season. But that still doesn’t necessarily mean that the open ocean will be rough during that time. And during repositioning cruises, there are almost never any lines or waits for these activities that are otherwise packed during the single sea day of a regular cruise itinerary.

Although the fares are lower than comparable cruises, the one-way nature of the trips means additional travel costs. One-way flights are rarely a bargain, so be sure to factor in the cost of air travel (if required) before assessing the value of a deal. Royal Caribbean’s 7-day Boston to Puerto Rico itinerary in November 2025 is also available for under $100 per person, per day.

What sets Viking Ocean Cruises apart are its unique features and amenities that elevate the repositioning cruise experience to new heights. From spacious and elegantly appointed staterooms to world-class dining options curated by renowned chefs, every aspect of the journey is designed to exceed expectations. Passengers can relax and unwind in luxurious onboard spas, enjoy enriching lectures and cultural performances, and partake in immersive shore excursions led by knowledgeable guides. With attentive service and attention to detail at every turn, Viking Ocean Cruises ensures that every moment spent onboard is nothing short of extraordinary. On many repositioning cruises, you will not get off the ship as often as you might on a typical sailing because there are no ports in the middle of the ocean you're crossing. These itineraries often feature a string of sea days, so be prepared to spend more time and money on board.

Repositioning cruises are typically offered at a discounted rate and can be an affordable way to travel between different regions or continents. Instead, there are typically interesting ports scheduled along the way, in an effort to make them more enticing to prospective passengers. These one-way repositioning cruises tend to be long (2+ weeks) in order to have time to cross an ocean or change hemispheres.

Disney Cruise Pirate Night Everything You Need to Know for 2024

pirate night disney cruise

In recent years Disney Cruise Line has taken to having guests use their phones to view the menu in the main dining rooms. However, if you are someone who appreciates looking at a physical menu, I recommend asking your wait staff and they will be happy to give you a physical menu each night of the sailing. It is interesting because I have heard that many guests find the Pirate Night menu to be the worst onboard. Throughout Pirate Night, guests will have the opportunity to see classic characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and more in special pirate-themed outfits. From donning pirate garb to learning the lingo, a little preparation can transport you and your family from mere spectators to lively participants in this whimsical pirate saga. You will find that just about everyone is dressed up for Pirate night on a Disney Cruise.

Pirate Night Menu

Alison Meacham is the founder of EverythingMouse Disney Blog. For over 15 years she has shared her love of Disney Parks, Disney Cruises and Universal Orlando. In over 30 years of Disney Travel she has spent countless months in Disney Parks and has sailed on over 45 cruises. A British native and now a United States resident she splits her time between California, Florida and the UK. She helps over 200,000 people per month follow their Disney travel dreams. Guests of all ages are encouraged to bring their best pirate attire and costumes.

Curse of the Black Pearl on Funnel Vision

On most cruises, around 4PM you’ll see Pirate Trivia being held somewhere on the Disney Wish. Well, no need to worry about whether you do or don’t want to try your hand at these late-night treats. The Disney Wish does NOT offer a Pirate Night buffet in Marceline Market. The Pirate Night menu on Disney Wish is, unfortunately, exactly the same as the old menu on all the older ships.

PIRATE NIGHT APPETIZER MENU

For those who don’t speak boat that means on the right side of the ship if you are facing front. We were able to see the fireworks, but had a obstructed view because of the AquaDuck tubing. Pirates League makeovers cost money and I think that the earlier you get the makeover the more time you have to enjoy it. Scheduling your appointment near the opening time of Pirates League is especially important if your have first dinner. Otherwise you may have to miss out on part or all of dinner to get your makeover done.

pirate night disney cruise

You don’t want to miss Mickey’s Pirates IN the Caribbean deck party, a family-friendly interactive show featuring famous Disney characters. Guests become members of Mickey’s Pirate Crew as they participate in a series of pirate-themed musical numbers. We noticed that the show on the Disney Magic was a bit different than the show on the Disney Dream. Aside from activities and dressing up, Pirate Night also consists of themed food and dining for all guests onboard.

DCL originally confirmed that the 3-night cruises would have Pirate Night but then, in August 2023, said that this was no longer the case. The advice for the best places to view the fireworks and show is the same as for the Fantasy and Dream. If you are on Deck 9 you will still be able to watch the fireworks from most places.

We donned a pirate hat and hook with some shredded clothing and striped tights -- and we fit right in. Costumes ranged from elaborate Jack Sparrow replicas to simple earrings and eye patches, but everyone seemed to have fun. Everyone onboard is encouraged to dress up, and many passengers bring costumes with them specifically for this event.

Complete Guide to Pirate Night on Disney Cruise Line

Most places on Deck 10 are going to give a decent view of the fireworks. On Classic Ships the Magic and Wonder fireworks can be seen in the sky on the Starboard side of the ship. So there are many good places to view this part of the evening. The Pirates in the Caribbean Party follows basically the same formula on all the ships, with the exception of the Wish. There are usually two shows, with the second show being followed by the fireworks.

This day happened to be the 4th day of our 7-day cruise, or about halfway through our cruise sailing. While sailing onboard Disney Fantasy, I was able to see what Pirate Night was all about! I was most curious to see exactly what this event entailed and what it had to offer for Disney Cruise Line guests of all ages, from families with little ones to adult couples. As the echoes of pirate laughter fade into the starry night and the Disney ship sails towards new horizons, the memory of Pirate Night anchors itself within the hearts of every adventurer on board.

The Pirates League packages are available at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on the Disney Cruise Line, and they are only available on Pirate Nights. If you are interested in booking one of these, our tip is to do it as soon as possible, as they are popular and will likely sell out ahead of your cruise. Since 2007, our family has been dishing out tried and true recipes for classic, home-cooked food online. We’re your place for more than 1,000 actionable, traditional recipes to serve and celebrate your friends and family. Our top “insider” tips for everything you need to know about Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise.

The buffet starts right at the end of the fireworks and only lasts about 45 minutes. The line can be ridiculously long, but if you want a special snack, you will find this a nice change from the regular food choices. Get there early to grab a seat up front or find a great viewing spot from the balcony. Outside on the main deck, you will find that the pool has been covered up and the stage has been set for the “Pirates in the Caribbean” Deck Party. When the Disney Cruise room steward makes up your stateroom, he/she will leave you a Disney Pirate Bandanna for each member in your party. While it might be called Pirate Night, the pirate fun is an all day event!

“Pirates of the Caribbean” will also be playing either on the Funnel Vision by the pool deck or inside the movie theater on board. Guests wishing to get into the pirate spirit may also stream the Pirates of the Caribbean films, or Peter Pan, via their television inside their stateroom.

Some wear full on Disney Cruise pirate costumes, while others just wear a Disney pirate t-shirt or a pirate dress. You won’t want to miss the chance to see all your favorite Disney characters dressed as pirates performing pirate dances and doing a short performance. When packing pirate costumes (or any costume, for that matter), be mindful of toy weapons. When it comes time for the live shows of Pirate Night, the pool deck fills up faster than you can say shiver me timbers.

What to Expect During a Halloween Cruise with Carnival

halloween cruise

Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime Cruises are returning, offering families the perfect blend of holiday festivities and Disney magic. With exciting itineraries to Hawaii, the South Pacific, and the newest island destination in The Bahamas, there are plenty of opportunities to create unforgettable memories at sea. Whether you’re traveling as a family, a couple, or a group of friends, Carnival is going all out to make sure you enjoy the spookiest time of year! We’ve taken care of everything to make sure your holiday at sea is exciting and full of memories. For the grown-ups, there’s an adults-only Halloween dance party featuring the Disney Villains. This is a great opportunity to let loose and enjoy some grown-up fun, with plenty of spooky surprises in store.

Trick or Treating

Plus, all of the portholes in the main guest areas feature silhouettes of Disney villains and other Halloween icons. If you’re considering booking a Disney Cruise, you may be wondering how much more it will cost to sail on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise compared to a typical Disney Cruise. We've all heard the jokes that Halloween is basically an excuse to take any costume and make it sleazy. Keep in mind that there will likely be children on the cruise with you, and you might feel a teensy bit out of place if your costume amounts to little more than thigh-highs and a push-up bra. If your ship hosts an after-hours adult costume contest, by all means, have at it. One of the most charming parts about Halloween on the High Seas is the magical décor.

Departure Ports & Destinations Visited on a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise

Celebrating holidays aboard a cruise ship can double your vacation fun, yet few high seas celebrations conjure as many howls of delight as Halloween. For many mainstream lines, Halloween cruises are big, splashy events featuring costumed passengers and festivities galore. You never know what treats lurk around the corner on our Frightfully Fun Halloween Cruises! When you board a Carnival cruise ship in October, you can take the kids trick or treating just like always! Kids will love cruising up and down the ship’s promenade collecting candy during a special trick or treating session. For a taste of home, bring your own trick or treat bags or buckets and collect all the sweets you can handle!

Our Guide to Disney Cruise Line's Halloween Themed Sailings

Our sailing aboard Disney Dream was actually during Halloween, but we're told the onboard events were the same as those held on other October voyages. With its Halloween on the High Seas events -- fleet-wide, including the brand-new Disney Wish -- all ages are shamelessly encouraged to dress up, boogie down and have tons of eerie fun. Even otherwise docile ship announcements take on a phantom vibe, almost as if a “Ghost Host” has stowed away. You won't find a cruise line that embraces your obsession with October 31st quite like Disney Cruise Line does. If Halloween is one of your favorite holidays, this is one cruise with a theme you will not want to miss. And of course, no Disney Cruise is complete with a souvenir shirt to remember the occasion.

Disney Cruise Line’s Fall 2024 Halloween and Holiday Cruises Details Revealed

On the Disney Dream, this was a silent dance party, which, if you’ve never experienced one before, is both weird and hilarious. Most people weren’t into it and, besides a few lurkers laughing at folks on the floor dancing like no one was watching, the place cleared out pretty quickly after the last award was announced. Mickey’s Mouse-querade is a spooktacular scare-a-bration starring much-loved Disney characters in full Halloween costumes.

When it comes to Disney Cruise Line, the factors that determine the price of your cruise are your sale date, ports of call, and occupancy. So it could work out that your Halloween on the High Seas sailing could be just as much or a little less than a normal sailing. Not so favorably, spooky season coincides with Hurricane Season.

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing and Scream

When planning for your October cruise to Mexico, Hawaii, or another alluring destination, be sure to prepare your Halloween costume. Scary or otherwise, you can go all out and compete for Best Costume in our shipwide costume contest. No matter what your Halloween style, one thing is for sure – you won’t want to miss the excitement! Costumes are encouraged for both adults and children, because you’re never too old to celebrate Halloween. Keep in mind that pirate night is separate from the Halloween festivities.

Costume Parties and Contests

Unfortunately for us, there was some sort of issue with the effects and well, it wasn’t really a whole lot different than just watching Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen. And during our Halloween on the High Seas cruise, this was actually during Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party and we left halfway through because we knew we’d rather be at the party. As much as we love Nightmare Before Christmas, we preferred to be where the action is.

Cost of Halloween on the High Seas vs. Other Disney Cruises

Just because you’re at sea doesn’t mean you have to miss out on one of the most exciting holidays of the year. On our Halloween cruises, kids can revel in the Halloween fun during a trick-or-treating candy scavenger hunt or costume parade. Adults can sip on Halloween-themed cocktails, or attend a Halloween Ball using our innovative silent party technology. Spend time with the family during our Halloween-themed movie nights under the stars, a Halloween-themed trivia night, and even a Halloween family dance party. True to its adults-only mantra, Virgin Voyages' Halloween-themed sailings feature ghoulish grownup activities on board its ships. Onboard, passengers encounter craft cocktails, a Zombie Grog Walk, costume parties, salty trivia and spooky decorations.

That is a little bit high, but since we don’t tend to go crazy with souvenir spending, I just factored into the cost of goodies we may have wanted to splurge onboard. But seriously, there are a few things you might want to pack for a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise. If you want to dress up for the festivities, don’t forget a costume. Truthfully, there are not a lot of extra things that need to be packed for a Halloween cruise.

This created so much buzz that the trio was also introduced to land lovers at Disneyland’s Oogie Boogie Bash. The lines for characters are usually not terribly long, but we recommend getting there close to the start time as Cast Members will “close” the line when the character’s time slot is almost over. The Sanderson Sisters line gets very long, so we recommend arriving early. They will close this line once it appears to be at the minute mark. We arrived 20 mins early and ended up waiting a total of about 35 mins.

The cast and crew on Disney Cruise Line are so helpful and will be able to direct you to the right place. Although generally specialty cruises can be a little more expensive, Halloween on the High Seas Cruises are often during hurricane season and that can help you snag a great deal. Also, some of the itineraries and ships that tend to be a little less popular are less expensive.

About Alaska Cruises

The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go. Oceania currently offers 30+ Alaska cruise options, plus Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Programs that let cruisers explore places like Anchorage and Denali in Alaska and Calgary in Canada. For cruisers 5–12 years old, it also offers the Alaska Youth Explorer Program, which is staffed by camp counselors and centers around Alaska-inspired activities and programming. They tend to have fewer families – a bonus for a romantic getaway – and a loyal following of regular passengers – a great way to make new friends. Additionally, you may have the option of sailing from larger cities, which translates to money saved on transportation. With a maximum number of just under 600 passengers for all ships, the service is exceptional.

About Susan B. Barnes, Your Alaska Cruise Guide

We have a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with our guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks. Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. Finally, you'll find some San Francisco round-trip itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. You'll find magnificent mountains (often snow-capped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals.

Passengers can walk on, bring their vehicles and choose some unique accommodations. Book a “no frills” cabin or actually pitch a tent on deck for a travel adventure. If you are traveling with your own vehicle, four-legged family members are welcome. The choice for those who enjoy specialty cuisine on a small(er) ship is Oceania Cruises.

Silversea Alaskan Cruise

You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help. Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early. Onboard naturalists generally narrate what you're seeing, so head to the observation lounge (or tune to a broadcast on your in-room television) to learn about some of the top sights featured on scenic cruising days. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dogsledding or hiking adventure on the ice.

Or put your bedtime on hold and join in Fairbanks' Midnight Sun events during the bright summer solstice. Our Alaska tours give you hundreds of unique moments to capture, keep and treasure forever. With an expedition heritage that dates back to 1896, it’s no wonder Hurtigruten Expeditions found its way to Alaska. The cruise line with a keen focus on exploration, adventure and science has two of its hybrid technology ships—MS Roald Amundsen, built in 2019, and MS Fridtjof Nansen, built in 2020—sailing the waters that surround The Great Land.

Alaska is all about exploring the Great Outdoors with family and friends, learning about US History and enjoying wildlife. There are hikes, kayaking, mountain biking, ziplining, and dog sledding for more energetic travelers. On an Alaska cruise, you’ll experience everything from raw, untamed natural wonders on an extravagant scale to rich history, buzzing cities, vibrant and delicious cuisine, and a warm welcome. Vast, creaking blue-white glaciers inch their way to the sea as jagged, snow-capped mountain peaks pierce the sky. Bears prowl rock-strewn beaches, while salmon-laden rivers rush through pristine, old-growth forest, bald eagles perched watchfully in the treetops. Choose the style to suit your personal taste, from Destination Highlights to Small Group Discoveries, or even custom-designed Private Journeys.

Night Alaska Southbound Glacier

On an Alaska cruisetour, encounter wildlife in their natural habitats and experience their unique personalities for yourself. This luxury cruise line offers classic and expedition-style cruising, the latter of which takes aboard the 274-passenger Silver Wind. (Classic cruises, on the other hand, take place on board Silver Muse, Silver Nova, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper, or Silver Moon). Nova and Moon offer the Sea and Land Taste program (S.A.L.T), offering culinary connoisseurs the incredible opportunity to experience the local food scene and culture both on and off the ship. Last but not least, keep in mind that Silversea sails between Vancouver and Seward (with the exception of one September 2024 itinerary, which sails from Nome to Vancouver).

A special zone for solo travelers is a rare concept in the cruise world, where almost all rooms for vacationers are designed for two people and sold with per-person fares that are based on two people occupying the room. Why did we pick Norwegian Encore over Norwegian Bliss as the ship offering the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for luxury lovers? Built a year after Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore offers one big improvement for the upscale crowd as compared to Norwegian Bliss. However, keep in mind that Alaska can be chilly, even at the height of summer, and rainy, too. For that reason, we discount the value of some of the family-friendly attractions on the Norwegian ships, which are open to the elements, and consider the Royal Caribbean ships the best of the bunch for Alaska cruises from Seattle. Unlike the Royal Caribbean ships, the Norwegian ships also have epic waterslides on their top decks, which in theory, might put them over the top in any listing of the best cruise ships for families based in Seattle.

They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its native cultures and Gold Rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states. Regardless of which ship you choose, Royal Caribbean’s Alaska expeditions promise “warm impressions of the wilderness,” meaning shore excursions and glacier viewings that prioritize comfort. Royal Caribbean also puts an emphasis on hearty, locally sourced food like wild-caught salmon, satisfying sourdough, and fresh-picked Alaska berries galore.

However, if it's a sunny summer day, temperatures can shoot into the 70s and even low 80s. It also rains a lot in Alaska; it's drier in the spring than in the summer. The itinerary’s Scenic Sailings include the 500-mile Inside Passage on Day 2 and glacier-ensconced Yakutat Bay on Day 8. Cruisers will be accompanied by a Viking Resident Historian who will deliver lectures on Pacific Northwest expansion and development, indigenous people, and glaciers.

Explore fjords, glaciers and Gold Rush-era towns on weekend voyages out of Seattle. All of Oceania’s cruises emphasize the locals and cuisine is a highlight. It boasts “the finest cuisine at sea,” so if you’re a foodie in search of Alaskan flavors, an Oceania cruise could be the ideal fit for you.

One of our best value land tours for time-conscious guests offering an up close Denali experience, tour of Alaska’s largest city and moderate hotel properties. I’m a Florida-based freelance travel and lifestyle journalist who has embarked on more than a dozen cruises, including several to Alaska. As a traveler, I am just as comfortable bicycling through Italian olive groves and SCUBA diving the wall of sharks in French Polynesia as I am sipping bubbles in a Champagne house and dining at Michelin-starred restaurants. In 2022, the cruise line was the first to receive Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, meaning its Alaska-bound ships serve only fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood. The 7-Day Glacier Discovery itinerary is offered both northbound and southbound, both of which include cruising the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay, and calling upon Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. The fun continues the minute cruisers disembark in each port, with excursions ranging from dogsledding to private helicopter tours.
